Ruane welcomes progress on ETB Building

Published: 25 April, 2014

Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane, has welcomed the news that the new ETB adult education building at (the Old Kingsbridge) Rush St/Lucan St. Castlebar will now progress to the next phase of development. Planning permission for the change of use of the building has now been approved and a consultant will be recruited in the coming days to oversee the fitting out of the building. From September, all adult and continuing education services, including adult literacy, BTEI, VTOS, Youth Office, Adult Guidance will be located under one roof in the newly acquired central ETB building, based at Rush St/Lucan St, (where the Kingsbridge used to be) rather than in rented buildings scattered throughout the town of Castlebar. According to Cllr. Ruane, a member of Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education and Training Board: "The announcement at yesterday's ETB meeting is very welcome. We've been waiting for some time for progress on this new building. Now that planning permission has been approved, a consultant will be employed to oversee the fitting out of the building in the coming days. "It's very positive that adult and continuing education services will be under one roof in the newly acquired ETB building rather than scattered around the town in rented buildings. This will ensure a better integrated service for adult learners and significant savings on rent from an already over-stretched budget. It will also provide a much needed boost to Castlebar town centre. It's crucial that no time is wasted now and that work is progressed so that the new building will be ready for September, the start of the new academic year.
